ENDANGERED CRAFTS - Revival and Conservation

With every new list of “Endangered Crafts” or “Crafts in Urgent Need of Safeguarding” published, the light of tradition and culture diminishes a little. The loss of these crafts means a loss of heritage, culture and history dating back to ancient times. However, not all hope is lost, thanks to the torchbearers below who have been working hard towards keeping these crafts alive and trying to brighten the fading light.

Nana Addae Gyamera

Nana Addae Gyamera from Ghana is the cultural and traditional head of Feyiase Akoyem, and is actively involved in supporting and promoting sustainable development in the town. The craft of making talking drums has been certified “critically endangered” by the Manhyia Palace, the seat and Centre for Tradition and Culture in the Ashanti region of Ghana. These drums are primarily constructed using two materials— timber wood and leather/cowhide which are both naturally sourced.
