Selection Criteria

 
 

The awards honors artisans whose work demonstrates a high level of commitment to design and creativity while also creating ecological, social and cultural impact. We encourage every applicant to include these in their processes.

Qualifiers: We will accept products made with natural or non-toxic dyes, recycled, up cycled, handmade, zero-waste philosophy & empowering women artisans with fair wages.

Non-qualifiers: We will not accept products made in synthetics or leather. Materials have to be environment friendly without toxic or hazardous content. Use of waste or recycled nature-friendly material is highly recommended

Who is an Artisan?

An artisan is a skilled individual who creates original and high quality handmade products with a unique design focus using traditional methods in the process. They make these products themselves or with the assistance of a team and take responsibility for sourcing and finishing the product.

What are we looking for?

The Jury will select the winners based on the following criteria:

  1. Design & Aesthetics and application (20%) Think bold, be inspiring, be original. Use the theme as a guiding philosophy which you can connect to your design and explain the vision. Think of how the design can be applied to make a finished product such as clothing, bags, home decor and so forth

  2. Technique (30%). Present your master skills, the unique approach to your process that will wow the judges

  3. Craftsmanship, Quality & Finish (25%). No idea is at its optimum without great artistry, quality and fine finish

  4. Materials & process demonstrating adoption of sustainable practices (25%). We place great emphasis on responsible sourcing, eco-friendly materials, low waste of materials and energy. Be innovative, challenge yourself to be the impact creatives leading the world with an example of how to create in a conscious manner.

TEXTILE

Criteria for handweaved

Materials
Hand weaved textile using eco-friendly yarns, low toxic or natural dyes or zero waste practices. The dyes, colors, sourcing transparency will all be encouraged to share in the application process

Format of the fabric

You must submit a textile and not a finished product unless its a finished product with length and width such as scarf or a quilt. The artisan must be able to explain how the textile submitted can be applied in real life. Example: Can the textile be used to make a garment and if yes what type, or a home decor item, an art piece, a bag and so forth. The minimum length hand weaved should have the width sand length sufficient to become the product you have in mind for. If it is hand embroidered textile for a dress then minimum 3 meters would be ideally required. If it is for a top then 2 meters would be required. If unable to present the length as mentioned above minimum 1 meter is needed. Make to finish the edges too. The review will consider what the artisans visualizes the piece of work to become.

Criteria for surface decor

Materials

The base fabric use for surface decor has to be made of natural material, we encourage using handweaved textiles. please take note we will be reviewing the eco-friendly component of the embroidery threads, beads, appliqué material or the dyes used. The jury encourages mention of suppliers for the materials in the application process

The minimum length embroidered, painted should have the width and length sufficient to become the product you have in mind for. If it is hand embroidered textile for a dress then minimum 3 meters would be required. If it is for a top then 2 meters would be required. If unable to present the length as mentioned above minimum 1 meter is needed. Make to finish the edges too The review will consider what the artisans visualizes the piece of work to become.

JEWELRY

Criteria for jewelry

Format - Number of Items
You can submit 1-2 items of jewelry in one application - a ring or a bracelet or necklace and bracelet so that judges can see a continuity of the theme and craftsmanship across the different pieces.

You can submit maximum 2 separate applications of different jewelry designs.

Materials & Process

Materials must be sustainable materials. The application form will require you to explain how is it sustainable and where is it sourced from. Give as much details as possible. How is your process conscious and unique such as less waste, reusing waste, can inspire others

Technique

Handmade by the applicant should be made by using the techniques of casting, welding, forging, soldering, carving, embroidery or created with any combination of these techniques. The design has to involve a technique where the design is forged from the raw form of a material.

Criteria for Living Spaces Decor

Format & Technique

We will accept handcrafted products by the applicant that are 3 dimensional in nature and are used for decorative purposes using techniques such as basketry, pottery, sculpture to make vessels, vases, and art pieces etc for floor and surface tops.

Dimensions

The dimensions have to be within 15” height X 10” width, weight to be maximum 6 kgs. If it is delicate then applicant must cover the insurance and we will cover the shipping.

Materials must be sustainable materials. The application form will require you to explain how is it sustainable and where is it sourced from. Give as much details as possible

CONSERVATION & REVIVAL

Accepting Textile, Jewelry and Decor Craft forms

We strongly support the effort of the communities working with crafts on the verge of extinction or are in the process of revival. This category invites artisans from crafts listed by a credible organisation or museum as endangered, if possible. Our team will be verifying with the organization that has given the certification. You can also apply if you are aware that there are less than 20 artisans practicing your craft. If you are also working on the revival of a craft form then please do participate

There must be:

  • A group submission as a community. It can be represented by one individual but the process will involve the additional members

  • A master artisan to teach the craft.

  • A community or one family who can begin learning the craft and then bring more members into this fold

  • A community whose livelihood depends on its conservation and revival

  • Efforts already in motion to prevent extinction of the crafts by promoting or working on its revival

Format & Technique

We will accept handcrafted product by the applicant that fall within the textile, jewelry and decor category. The format we receive has to become an final product in the long run when it is developed.
